There is a lot of information to be found on the Internet about hundreds of land trusts worldwide. They range from protecting one single piece of land or property to protecting miles of land nation-wide. From the smallest to the largest, each has one goal in common: the preservation of land for the greater good of community.
Here in BC there are more than 40 active land trusts. One place to start when looking into land trusts is to visit the Land Trust Alliance of BC website. This organization is a networking hub for land trusts throughout the province and serves as a source of education. It held an annual in-person conference until 2020, since which time the organization has delivered online webinars and educational sessions. Recently, the organization celebrated 25 years of service with its Almanac. This booklet connects the reader with conservancies around the province and is a great way to understand the work that is taking place to protect areas we all love.
Each land trust is either non-profit or has Charitable status. Most land trusts have agreed to abide by the Canadian Land Trust Alliance standards and practices. For anyone wishing to delve into the heart of land trusts, it is worth visiting these standards to see how land trusts work and the governing documents that keep them on track. Malaspina Land Conservancy Society has agreed to abide by these standards and has incorporated this information into its updated constitution.
